Why People Are Doing This Now

VHS tapes do not last forever. The adhesive layer that holds the picture onto the tape absorbs moisture from the air and slowly breaks down, which is why old tapes squeal, shed and drop out. Most consumer tapes stay watchable for 10 to 30 years, and decay speeds up rather than leveling off.

The other half of the problem is the machine. VCR production ended in 2016. Working players are getting harder to find, and a worn one can damage a fragile tape in a single pass. Waiting costs quality that cannot be recovered later.

What We Digitize

Send one format or mix several in the same box. There are no per-format surcharges.

VHS to digital

The standard full-size cassette used in home VCRs from 1976 onward. This is the format most family archives are built on.

VHS-C to digital

The compact cassette used in shoulder-mount and palm camcorders, usually played through an adapter. The tape is thinner than standard VHS, so these often arrive in worse condition than their age suggests.

S-VHS to digital

Super VHS, a higher resolution version used by enthusiasts and semi-professional shooters. We capture it at the higher-quality the format supports.

Hi8 and Video8 to digital

The 8mm camcorder cassettes that dominated the late 80s and 90s. The tape is narrower than VHS and drops out more readily, so careful handling matters here.

Digital8 to digital

Digital recording on an 8mm shell. The signal holds up better than analog, but the tape underneath ages the same way.

MiniDV to digital

The small digital cassette standard from the late 90s through the 2000s. When these fail, they tend to fail suddenly, showing frozen blocks rather than a gradual fade.

Betamax to digital

Sony's rival to VHS, discontinued in 2002. Working decks are now genuinely scarce, which makes these more urgent than most.

MicroMV and PAL

Less common formats that many services turn away. We accept both.

What You Get Back

We convert VHS to MP4, the standard format that plays on iPhones, Android phones, Windows PCs, Macs and smart TVs without any extra software.

Files are delivered through a private cloud link. You can stream them, download individual clips, or take everything at once as a ZIP. Share the link with family anywhere, and they can watch without creating an account.

Prefer VHS to USB? Add a USB drive at checkout and we will load your files onto it before shipping.

What About VHS to DVD

Many people search for VHS to DVD because that is the language they grew up with. We deliver digital files instead, and that is a deliberate choice.

DVD players are disappearing the same way VCRs did. A DVD also cannot be texted to your sister, streamed on a phone or backed up to a second location. MP4 files can. They play on devices your family already owns, and they can be copied as many times as you like without losing quality.

If you specifically want a physical copy, the USB drive option covers that.

Why Hand Digitizing Matters

Bulk operations run several tapes at once through automated racks. It is faster and cheaper, and it works reasonably well for tapes in good condition.

Old tapes are frequently not in good condition. A tape that squeals needs to be stopped and treated, not pushed through. A tape with a wrinkled leader needs a person to notice. Tracking that drifts halfway through a recording needs adjusting while it plays.

Every item at Reel Keeper is handled by a technician from start to finish, and every order goes through a quality check before it ships. Not a sample. Every order.

Damaged, moldy and forgotten tapes

Some services refuse tapes with visible mold or return them untouched. We do not. Most old and damaged tapes are recoverable. Squealing usually points to binder breakdown, which is treatable. mold needs cleaning before playback but is rarely fatal to the recording.

Color loss and tracking problems are routine. If a tape genuinely cannot be recovered, we tell you before processing and refund that item in full. You do not pay for footage you do not get.

Your Files Stay Private

Technicians see a brief preview during quality checks and nothing more. Your footage is never shared, never sold, never used for marketing, and never used to train AI models. Your download link is encrypted and unique to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to convert VHS to digital?

Standard processing takes six to eight weeks from the day your box arrives. Rush processing is available if you need it sooner. You get updates at each stage rather than waiting in silence

Do I get my original tapes back?

Yes, always. Your originals ship back to you, insured and padded, after the digitizing is finished.

What resolution do you digitize VHS at?

We capture at the highest resolution the source tape supports, typically 480i for standard VHS, and encode to high-quality MP4. Film reels are captured at up to 4K depending on the format.

Will the digital version look better than the tape?

Usually yes. Clean playback heads and properly calibrated equipment produce a better picture than a household VCR. Color and fade restoration is available as an add-on for tapes that need it.

Can I mix VHS with camcorder tapes and photos in one kit?

Yes. Each item is barcoded and processed individually, and your download link organizes everything by item. There are no per-format surcharges.

What if a tape is too damaged to transfer?

We contact you before processing and refund that item in full.

Is it safe to mail my only copy?

Your originals are insured through UPS both ways, and the box is engineered for fragile media. Packing instructions and protective inserts come in the kit.

Is there a VHS conversion service near me?

You do not need one nearby. Reel Keeper is a mail in VHS conversion service that ships to all 48 contiguous US states. The kit comes to you and goes back with a prepaid label.

How much does it cost to convert VHS to digital?

Pricing depends on kit size rather than Per tape. See the pricing section above for current kit options.
