Which Audio Tapes Do You Have?

Most family recordings are on one of two kinds of tape. You do not need to know which one to order, but this quick guide helps you see what is in the box.

Which Audio Tapes Do You Have?
Tape How to Recognize It What People Recorded Most Common Years
Cassette tape A small plastic case with
two little reels inside, about
4 by 2.5 inches. Side A and
side B
Music, mixtapes, family voices, interviews and voice
letters
1970s to 2000s
Reel to reel Open reels of thin brown
tape, usually in a square
cardboard box.
Home recordings,
music, radio and
family events
1950s to 1970s

Please note that we do not accept microcassettes or 8-track tapes.

How Much Audio Is on
Your Tape?

Look for a number on the cassette label, such as C60 or C90. It tells you the total minutes of tape, split across the two sides.

Reel to reel tapes vary much more. One reel can hold anywhere from half an hour to several hours, depending on the speed it was recorded at.

Sharing With Family

Easy sharing with family, who do not need an account to listen

Audio enhancement cleans up hiss and background noise, so voices and music come through more clearly.

Why Digital Files Instead of CDs

Many people look for a way to turn cassettes into CDs. We deliver digital files instead, for a few simple reasons.

  • Many new computers and cars no longer have a CD player

  • CDs scratch, and a damaged disc can skip or stop playing

  • A digital file can be shared with every family member in minutes

  • A file can be copied and backed up as many times as you like

If you still want a CD for a parent or grandparent, you can burn one from your files at home.

Why Old Tapes Should Not Wait

Audio tape wears out over time. Sound gets duller, tapes stretch, and some older tapes turn sticky as they age.

Working cassette decks and reel to reel players are also harder to find and repair every year.

The sooner a tape is transferred, the more of each recording you save.
